Let Us Now Praise Arthur Russell
May 20, 2024
Quietly integrating early disco breakdowns with the downtown avant-garde scene, Arthur Russell was criminally overlooked for his singularity in his too short a life - especially in his shape-shifting, never settling on one sound but moving from dub to minimalist composition to heartbreaking country to dance floor staples. “Genius” gets thrown around a lot these days, but this guy was truly the real deal.
A day shy of what would be his 73rd birthday, we celebrate Arthur with some of my faves - stunning cello instrumentals, folky nuggets, new wave weirdness, and super sexy disco, as well as collaborations with Bootsy Collins, Allen Ginsberg, and the Talking Heads!
Highlights include:
Tower of Meaning, Kiss Me Again, & Love Is Overtaking Me
